With artist cinema in Italy we find a multidisciplinary appoach to image and innovation and the development of a new language that is in contrast with traditional cinema. Here goes our selection:
BLACK OUT, ALDO TAMBELLINI 1965
Created between Italy and the US as an experiment in abstract cinema that involves some immersive environments. Produced through scarce interference both in visuals and sound. Including programmed art and a play between darkness and light to enhance the experience.
BARUCHELLO E GRIFI, VERIFICA INCERTA
This is one of the first artist films in 35mm created through cuts of film that was destined to be thrown away. These are cropped and become protagonists of a language of telling. It is an ironic tentative of nonsense. The idea of playing with the hypothesis of making a film with the best actors on a global level with such a small weight and reorganizing it with a system that is extremely rudimental. Revealing the trick of cinema, taking an image and wrapping it up through mounting. It is a commentary on the cinematographic industry. By tearing the message into bits the entire system is confronted. It becomes politically open; the film turns into a political message.
“…Da un sottoscala facemmo a pezzi Hollywood”
KAPPA, NATO FRASCA’
The journey without spatial and temporal categories. It is a series of images that are iconic within a culture and are converted and bring the spectator to support a film that in a certain way disappoints him.
MARIO SCHIFANO, UMANO DISUMANO
1969
A heartbeat links different images: a man, a cinematographic room, a sequence from a film by Goddard, mixed with other films works the screen reducing it to bits. It talks about the relationship between cinema and society. An intertwining of human happenings. The title is drawn from Nietzche. The heartbeat invades and distracts the viewer. It acts as a form of cinematographic experimentation. This is a moment in which Italian artists start going to the United States and begin to find themselves interfering with a space in which this type of image is already been pushed to levels that were never thought of quite yet in Italy.
