Australian artist based in New York Michael Stiegler studied fashion design and worked as a photographers assistant in Sydney and NYC. His frenetic painting, illustrations, and mixed media/collage compliment his edgy photographic style, as his surrounds heavily influence each discipline. His works combine his appetite for art and fashion photography with an energetic street-art appeal, where he says “ugliness and beauty coexist, just as they do in reality”. Michael uses his work as a commentary on the excess of contemporary culture, portraying the vulnerability, desire, anxiety, and lust of consumption in a modern world.
Inspired by the Bowery in NYC he mixes in a fun and playful way cultures of high fashion, drugs, homelessness, and late night parties. The artist keeps it very close to real life experience in such a way that his audience finds their realities truly represented in his caricatures of real life.
